Sonja is a multi-instrumentalist who started learning cello at the age of three. She is a classically trained A-Mus level performing cellist who has been playing for almost twenty years. Although she chose to pursue another discipline at a tertiary level, music has never been far from her life. She a strong performing background and loves playing in classical, folk, opera, and chamber music ensembles.
Sonja Dux’d Music Performance at school, and has a 5 year-long background of teaching. She loves to perform and has a passion for instilling the joy of music in students of all ages. Coming from a classical background, Sonja began playing music on stage with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and the Chamber Strings of Melbourne in 2015. She has branched out in to theatre and chamber work since 2019, playing with theatre companies such as Grover Theatre Company, Soundworks Productions, and OSMaD. She has taken part in Melbourne Fringe Festivals as well as playing in the Melbourne Festival, and plays gigs with her own quartet.
Although cello is Sonja’s principal instrument, she is also comfortable teaching guitar, piano and music theory. Sonja teaches with a friendly and supportive approach, while also recognising the importance of getting technique right from the beginning. She draws on both the Suzuki-method and AMEB to teach, and is cognisant that a teacher has a large part to play in the type of relationship a student builds with music and the learning process – teaching beginning cellists as people first and students second helps to ensure that this relationship is a positive as it can be.
Sonja is currently in her last few years of studying a double degree in Arts and Law at Monash University, and plans to undertake tertiary music study in post-grad. In her free time, she enjoys swimming and getting out in nature.
